Andros
The largest and least explored island
Andros is the Bahamas' best-kept secret. At 2,300 square miles, it's larger than all other Bahamas islands combined, yet remains virtually untouched by mass tourism.
The island's interior is a wilderness of pine forests, mangrove creeks, and freshwater wetlands—home to the mythical Chickcharney creatures of Bahamian folklore. But it's what lies beneath the surface that truly sets Andros apart: an underwater wonderland of blue holes, coral gardens, and the legendary Tongue of the Ocean.
For yacht charterers, Andros offers something increasingly rare: genuine discovery. Anchor in empty coves, explore caves that few have entered, and experience the Bahamas as it was before the world discovered it. The diving here rivals anywhere on Earth, yet you may have entire reef systems to yourself.
Must-See Highlights
Blue Holes
Andros has the highest concentration of blue holes in the world—mysterious underwater caverns that attract divers and scientists alike. Many remain unexplored.
Andros Barrier Reef
The third-largest barrier reef in the world stretches 190 miles along Andros, dropping into the Tongue of the Ocean—a mile-deep trench teeming with marine life.
Bonefishing Flats
World-renowned as the "Bonefishing Capital of the World." The vast shallow flats on the west side offer unparalleled opportunities for fly fishing enthusiasts.
Androsia Batik
Visit the famous Androsia factory to see traditional hand-dyed batik fabric being made—a unique Bahamian art form created only here.
Planning Your Charter
Navigation Notes
Andros requires an experienced captain familiar with its waters. The western flats are extremely shallow (often under 3 feet), while the eastern reef drops precipitously into the Tongue of the Ocean. Most anchorages are on the eastern side, near Fresh Creek and the barrier reef. Marina facilities are limited, so plan provisions accordingly.
What Makes Andros Special
Unlike the popular charter destinations, Andros offers genuine solitude. You won't find mega-resorts or cruise ship crowds here. What you will find is some of the world's best diving, fishing that dreams are made of, and an authentic glimpse of island life unchanged by modern tourism. For experienced charterers seeking adventure over amenities, Andros delivers.
